Scouting Dossier

PFF
Ioane broke out in 2025, earning an 80.0 overall grade, including an 87.0 pass-blocking grade that ranked 12th among 374 FBS guards. He excelled in stable pass-pro situations, grading in the 90th percentile on true pass sets and 95th percentile on five- and seven-step drops. Across 311 pass-blocking snaps, he allowed just four total hurries.
Strengths
● Lean for a 320-pounder, with hulking arms/thighs/trunk and a proportioned build ● Wide-bodied and stout at the point of attack to anchor in pass protection ● Powerful hands to thud and grip strength to latch and control ● Good use of independent hands to reposition and regain leverage ● Processes things quickly to sort and redirect with gap exchanges and stunts ● Efficient footwork, especially on short pulls, sweeps and zone runs ● Mauler in the run game; puts defenders on skates — and eventually on their backs ● Competes from snap to whistle and plays with a nasty temperament (Ioane: “When I go out there, I’m a different person. … (I’m the) most physical person out there.”) ● Earned rave reviews from NFL teams after his formal combine interviews (NFL scout: “Crushed it. … He’s going to play in this league as long as he wants.”) ● Dropped his weight from 345 pounds to 325 as a sophomore ● Committed only one penalty in 2025 (false start vs. Villanova) ● Experienced resume (32 career starts) and already carries himself like a pro
Weaknesses
● More smooth than sudden in his movements ● Average-at-best redirect and recovery skills in pass protection ● Too easily loses his balance attempting to quickly adjust in space 264 Back to table of contents -- 268 of 629 -- ● Missed one game because of injury his final season (Oct. 2025) ● Saw at least a handful of snaps at each of the five offensive line spots, but all 32 of his starts came at left guard
Projection
A two-and-a-half-year starter at Penn State, Ioane lined up at left guard in former offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki’s gap scheme. While learning under the watchful eye of respected offensive line coach Phil Trautwein, he made noticeable improvements each of the past three seasons (zero sacks allowed and zero holding flags over the past two years). Penn State’s offensive line largely underperformed in 2025 compared to expectations, but Ioane was the lone exception. He consistently played at a high level and earned All-America honors. Ioane both looks the part and plays the part. In pass protection, he is quick out of his stance and sports a stout base and commanding hands to anchor his spot. As a run blocker, he generates explosive power from his core to dig out defenders on drive/down blocks, flashing the competitive temperament to finish. He doesn’t move any faster than his size would suggest, but he stays efficient with his footwork and flexibility to be effective on movement-based blocks (not scheme-dependent). Overall, Ioane is a thick, sturdy blocker who consistently holds his ground in pass protection and covers up defenders in the run game. Built in the mold of Steve Avila, he projects as a long-term NFL starter at either guard spot.
