character
  • Despite having grown up a Wolverines fan, he was drawn to the academic/athletic balance at Northwestern and the chance to live in a big city such as Chicago.

Scouting Dossier

PFF
Tiernan is a smart, balanced and experienced tackle whose limitations stem from a naturally high pad level and shorter arm length. Despite that, his technique and football IQ give him a path to a starting role.
Strengths
● Tall, broad-shouldered frame, with smooth bulk throughout ● Efficient pass blocker with enough range to reach landmarks, making it tough to get around him ● Able to stand up bull-rush attempts when he transitions to his anchor ● Capable strength in his hands to get defenders off schedule ● Feints hands early to disrupt tempo of wide rushers ● Quick to sniff out and pass off stunts and games ● A-level work ethic (NFL scout: “Training staff said he’s in the building by 5 a.m., and always doing extras.”) ● Quiet by nature but worked hard to develop more of a voice after coaches challenged him (senior captain) ● Durable — finished career with 43 straight starts
Weaknesses
● Disproportionately shorter arms for his size ● Susceptible vs. long-arm moves that get into his frame ● Inconsistent knee bend, which creates some delay in his redirect and anchor technique (see 2025 Illinois tape) ● Balance too easily disrupted as run blocker ● Would like to see more of a mean streak into first contact, both in run game and as a finisher ● Needs to be more consistent hitting target at second level ● Offers some experience at right tackle, but 82.3 percent of college snaps came at left tackle
Projection
A starter for three-and-a-half years at Northwestern, Tiernan lined up at left tackle in former offensive coordinator Zach Lujan’s zone-based scheme. He started at right tackle opposite Peter Skoronski as a redshirt freshman before filling Skoronski’s shoes the past 231 Back to table of contents -- 235 of 629 -- three seasons as the Wildcats’ left tackle, finishing his career with 43 straight starts (he never considered opting out of the 2025 bowl game). He earned All-Big Ten honors as a junior and senior, and NFL scouts say he went from gentle giant to unquestioned leader of the offensive line room. Tiernan is a large-framed blocker with the controlled, efficient movements as a pass blocker to stay square against various pass-rush angles. His use of hands is advanced for his age, and it allows him to quickly reset and toy with defenders. His recovery skills and body control aren’t as consistent in the run game, which leads him to lose control of reps. Overall, Tiernan relies on refinement to compensate for his average length and redirect skills, using disciplined hands and poise to execute assignments. He’ll have swing tackle ability, although his best position long-term might be guard.
