A great pass breakup by cornerback Malik Muhammad (Texas) while guarding Ja'Kobi Lane (USC) was one of the better plays of the day.

Red Flags (1)

Extracted from Brugler background/weakness sections.
injury
  • Since he had grown up a Ducks fan, most expected him to sign with Oregon, but he was drawn to the opportunity with the Trojans.

Scouting Dossier

PFF
Strengths
● Tall, long athlete with room to get stronger ● Catching range pays dividends once the field shrinks (nine of 18 career touchdowns came in the red zone) ● Enormous mitts — using two hands is optional for him ● Quickly adjusts and casts a wide net with catch radius ● Gliding athlete with long strides to gallop on vertical routes ● Doesn’t immediately give back space to corners once he gains a step ● Can transition off of angle steps to leave off coverage leaning ● Flashes blocking chops when he uses his length and runs his feet ● Well-liked in the locker room; teammates feed off his energy 119 Back to table of contents -- 123 of 629 --
Weaknesses
● Slender body type with below-average mass and rail-thin lower body ● Underwhelming play strength; needs better commitment to the weight room ● Physical corners will dictate his routes and outmuscle him at catch points ● Upright, predictable route runner ● Below-average burst — corners stick to him in man coverage ● Very little to offer after the catch (3.8 YAC/reception in college) ● Drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for oddly trying to retrieve the football from Oregon after an interception (Nov. 2025) ● Modest career production — never surpassed 750 receiving in any of his three seasons ● Benched for first quarter of the UCLA game (Nov. 2025) for violation of team rules (NFL scout: “Will need to adopt a pro mindset in a hurry once he gets to the league.”)
Projection
A two-year starter at USC, Lane was an outside wide receiver (82.8 percent of career snaps) in head coach Lincoln Riley’s RPO spread scheme, as the clear No. 2 option behind Makai Lemon. He burst onto the scene as a sophomore, joining Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith and Colorado’s Travis Hunter as the only three players from a major conference with 12-plus touchdown grabs in 2024 (finished his career with 18 touchdown receptions). Lane provides a large strike zone for his quarterback and put some “wow” catches on film, often using just one hand. But the highlights aren’t enough to overlook the question marks. He is a young player in several areas of his game, including his route running. His stride length and stretched-out frame can be assets downfield (76.8 percent of his career catches resulted in either a first down or touchdown), but he needs to develop beyond that. Overall, Lane is a light, linear athlete with an outstanding catch radius, but play strength and separation concerns must be addressed for him to find steady success. Not having a special teams role won’t help his chances as NFL teams stack their receiver depth charts.
