Scouting Dossier

PFF
Strengths
● Tall, well-developed build, with thick lowers ● Plays with staggered stance to burst off the snap and into contact ● Technically sound as pass blocker, with good bend ● Keeps hands tight and coiled to strike with vinegar (always looking for work) ● Adequate base strength, with feel for angles ● Physical finisher in run game, creating torque from his hips ● Overwhelms linebackers when he reaches second level on time ● False start in bowl game was his only penalty in 2025 ● Introverted and not a vocal leader but will pull young guys aside and show his maturity ● Quality starting experience at both guard spots
Weaknesses
● Shortest arms and smallest hands among 22 guards invited to NFL combine ● Not a rangy player — had the slowest mph (18.50) among 189 players who ran at the combine ● Mediocre lateral agility, deterring his recovery skills ● Hit or miss when asked to be effective at the second level ● Bull rushers know they can catch him before he establishes his anchor ● Senior year was first time he was healthy enough to play a full season — missed most of 2023 season because of injuries, including to his left leg (Oct. 2023); missed two games as junior because of injury (Oct. 2024) ● Took center snaps at the Senior Bowl but only played guard in college 279 Back to table of contents -- 283 of 629 --
Projection
A three-year starter at Iowa, Stephens lined up at left guard in offensive coordinator Tim Lester’s zone-blocking scheme. After struggling and losing his starting job as an underclassman, he fought through that adversity, got healthy and developed into an All-Big Ten player as a senior. He didn’t allow a sack over the past three seasons and helped the Hawkeyes earn the 2025 Joe Moore Award as the nation’s top offensive line. Stephens embraces the physicality of the position and delivers pop at contact in all phases. In the run game, he can generate movement blocking down and has a feel for how lanes develop. His stubborn hands help him sustain, but his edges leak and marginal body control makes it tough for him to get out of compromised positions. Overall, Stephens might struggle compensating for his lack of ideal length and athleticism, but blocking awareness and the power in his hands give him a fighting chance. Given his coachability and mental maturation, he can earn a backup role as a rookie and eventually push for on-field reps.
