Scouting Dossier

PFF
Strengths
● Well-proportioned body with solid definition ● Field fast and covers a lot of green in a straight line ● His level of intelligence is mandatory for the position ● Combative, violent play style as a tackler and when taking on blocks ● At his best when he can spy and trust his athletic instincts ● Explosive downhill shooting gaps as a blitzer ● Play speed and motor on last play of the game are identical to first play ● Two-year team captain who sets high bar for his teammates with his practice and weight-room habits ● Started combined 47 games the past four seasons — it takes a lot for him to miss even a play
Weaknesses
● Shorter arms and smaller hands ● Will drop a shoulder and throw his body instead of wrapping, which leads to missed tackles ● Battle is usually over when climbers engulf him ● Slowed too easily; shed strength doesn’t match his intentions 476 Back to table of contents -- 480 of 629 -- ● Ball carriers know how to use his overaggressive pursuit angles against him ● Adequate drop range but too reactive and struggles to challenge throws ● Battled left and right shoulder injuries (Oct. 2025) during his senior season and missed two games
Projection
A two-year starter at BYU (and four-year starter overall), Kelly played the Rover linebacker position in former defensive coordinator Jay Hill’s 4-2-5 base scheme. After playing for Hill at Weber State, he quickly became a culture-setter at BYU, combining for 23.5 tackles for loss and 15 sacks in two seasons with the Cougars. He was a BYU team captain for both of those seasons, and head coach Kalani Sitake calls him “one of the best football players” he has ever been around. Growing up as a champion BMX racer, Kelly developed a fearless competitive drive that translates well to the football field. He does a terrific job playing with speed to the perimeter and is getting better at throttling down in space, although he still overruns angles at times. His hunting skills as a blitzer create mismatches within pressure packages. NFL scouts call him the “toughest player on the team” and love his leadership. Overall, Kelly has explosive speed and plays both instinctively and physically against the run, although his stiff movements could limit his upside in coverage versus NFL athletes. At the very least, Kelly will be a net positive in the locker room and a force on special teams.
