Scouting Dossier

PFF
Strengths
● Tall, bendy frame, with room to add more muscle ● Can get vertical and over the top of coverages with his speed ● Strides are long and swift — can really run in the open field ● Uses quick jab steps and hand swipes to defeat press ● Snappy at the top of routes with marginal gear-down in breaks ● Good awareness over the middle and along the boundaries ● Tracks the ball well over his shoulder and has balance for late adjustments ● Didn’t play on special teams at Texas Tech but made plays on punt/kick coverages at Miami (11 tackles) ● Strong character feedback (NFL scout: “Quiet kid but puts his head down and works … does whatever the coaches ask.”)
Weaknesses
● Skinny body type with lean muscle tone throughout ● Below-average play strength — will get hung up on physical defenders ● Corners can too easily bump him off his route path or against the sideline ● Crowded catch points are not his favorite situations ● Would like to see his drop rate (8.1 percent) trend the other way ● Still learning how to set up route breaks ● Low receiving averages in 2025 (50.4 yards per game, 12.4 yards per catch)
Projection
A one-year starter at Texas Tech (and two-year starter overall), Virgil was the X receiver in offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich’s version of the spread. Still relatively new to wide receiver (he moved from quarterback in 2020), he put himself on the NFL radar in 2024 with a breakout junior season at Miami (Ohio) . He moved to Lubbock for his final season and led the Red Raiders in catches, helping Texas Tech to the 2025 Big 12 championship. Virgil is a big receiver with the short-area quickness of a smaller player. He flashes suddenness in his release package to gain an initial advantage and can drop his weight at the top of routes to create spacing. He is tougher than his frame would have you believe, but he likely will require an adjustment period with NFL physicality mid-route and at the catch point. Overall, Virgil is a tall, silky-smooth athlete with the long-striding speed and adequate ball skills that give him a fighting chance as an outside pro receiver. His versatility on special teams coverages will increase his value. 118 Back to table of contents -- 122 of 629 --
