Scouting Dossier

PFF
Strengths
● Tall, wide-hipped blocker with an adequate bubble ● Flashes power in the run game to use his feet and redirect defenders ● Usually reaches pulling landmarks on time ● Improved anchor and attention to pad level to absorb head-up rushers ● Squares rushers and mixes up his strikes to keep defenders guessing ● Veteran presence; flagged just once (false start) in 2025 ● Described as an “unbelievable” leader — became known for his fiery pregame speeches ● Coaching staff often brings up his endurance to play through minor issues
Weaknesses
● Lacks desired arm length and agility by NFL standards ● Too easily bullied once pad level rises (see 2025 Big Ten championship game) ● Sacrifices balance when he tries to chase rushers with his hands ● Doesn’t have burst or change-of-direction skills to easily recover ● Inefficient movements on combo blocks and too often late reaching linebackers 322 Back to table of contents -- 326 of 629 --
Projection
A one-year starter at Indiana (and three-year starter overall), Coogan was a fixture at center (right-handed) in offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan’s balanced scheme. He wasn’t expected to be a starter at Notre Dame in 2024, but he was pushed into duty at center and then later transferred to the Hoosiers for his final season in 2025. He was up and down throughout his final season but didn’t allow a sack and played at a more consistent level during the College Football Playoff. Considered a potentially undrafted prospect over the summer, Coogan swayed scouts with his resilience, awareness and overall effectiveness while playing more than 1,000 offensive snaps in 2025. He has a pro body, with the play strength and hand use to slow rushers. However, his base diminishes when his pad level gets away from him, and he can be walked backward into the pocket. Overall, Coogan is a smart, tough-minded technician, though his mediocre athleticism, length and recovery skills will be tough to mask versus NFL defensive linemen. He projects as an interior backup who can fill in at guard or center.
