Scouting Dossier

PFF
Strengths
● Broad frame, with solid build through his chest and lower body ● Experienced at multiple safety roles, along with nickel ● Above-average acceleration, with adequate straight-line burst ● Reads routes from depth to trigger and go ● Showed improved trust in his vision and route anticipation as a senior, which led to more INT opportunities ● Outstanding tackle production ● No concerns about his toughness as a tackler (hates to come off the field) ● Senior captain, with dependable football character and coachability ● Extensive special teams experience (559 career snaps)
Weaknesses
● Lacks desired height, length and growth potential for the position ● Mediocre play strength when sifting or working off contact ● Shallow angles can lead to whiffed tackle attempts ● Needs to be more consistent at leveraging inside gaps ● Will leave coverage post; takes too many chances ● Lack of size shows against bigger pass catchers ● Too reactive and rigid, especially in man-to-man, allowing late separation ● Caught staring at the QB and can be manipulated
Projection
A three-year starter at Arizona, Johnson played the “B Kat” safety position in defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales’ scheme (his fourth defensive coordinator in five seasons in the program). He became a starter as a sophomore and posted consistent tackle numbers each year, with his best production coming as a senior (tied for the team lead in 2025 with four interceptions). Johnson put together a solid college resume and backs up that experience with a mature work ethic that translated to the field. Though his lack of length shows at times as a tackler, he throws his body around with admirable toughness as a run defender. In coverage, he showed improved awareness as a senior, but scouts have questions about his eye discipline and man-cover skills. Overall, Johnson lacks ideal size and coverage twitch, but his speed and physicality will give him an opportunity to find an NFL home as a backup strong safety. His versatile experience in the secondary and on special teams only helps his chances. S17 [—] Maryland 597 Back to table of contents -- 601 of 629 -- GRADE OVR.
