Scouting Dossier
PFF
Strengths
● Moves with athletic twitch in frame to get off the ball and into gaps
● Strong use of hands to work through contact
● Decent arsenal of inside/outside rush moves, with an understanding of how to sequence them
● Physicality as a run defender will attract double teams
● Keeps pad level in a workable position
● Effort (on and off the field) isn’t a concern
● Accountable and carries himself like a captain (NFL scout: “They’re gonna miss his ‘big brother’ energy in that building.”)
● Added more than 50 pounds in four months in 2022 to make the transition from linebacker to defensive line
Weaknesses
● Doesn’t have an established body of work (seven career starts and fewer than 1,000 defensive snaps)
● Lacks ideal height and length
● Can be bumped from his spot, especially on down blocks
● Struggles to stand out when asked to match power for power in trenches
● Missed tackles are usually a result of his amped-up play style
● Too often finds himself pursuing past the quarterback
● Underwent surgery on left ankle (Oct. 2025), which sidelined him for the remainder of his final college season
Projection
A one-year starter at Texas Tech, Gill-Howard played the three-technique in defensive coordinator Shiel Wood’s 4-2-5 base scheme. A
former Division II walk-on, he is a self-made player — he went from scout-team linebacker at Northern Illinois to impactful defensive
tackle for the Red Raiders. A midseason ankle injury robbed him of the second half of his final college season.
Every prospect takes a different journey to the NFL’s doorstep, and Gill-Howard is no exception. He made the transition to the
defensive line without sacrificing his athleticism, which allows him to slice through gaps and work down the line of scrimmage. Though
built with solid mass, he lacks ideal size and length for trench work, which often puts him at a disadvantage. His leadership capabilities
won’t go unnoticed by NFL coaches, however. Overall, Gill-Howard competes with the right mindset and energy, which
helps him compensate for any shortcomings. He will need the right fit to find a permanent spot but projects as a
rotational three-technique.
