Scouting Dossier

PFF
Strengths
● Plays with quick eyes and feet, with a knack for finding clear sightlines ● Adequate arm strength and delivers with touch ● Respectable accuracy when he has time and plays with rhythm ● Intelligent kid; shows improved anticipation from 2024 tape ● Finds escape hatch when pocket collapses ● Hardworking and focused (NFL scout: “His calming, resilient mindset spreads to his teammates. … [He] became a leader since he showed up.”) ● Posted a 24-12 record in 36 career starts ● Production improved each season at Illinois
Weaknesses
● Undersized, narrow frame, with an unassuming build ● Not a power thrower — doesn’t consistently drive deep outs with velocity ● Feet get a little jumpy at the top of his drop ● Can be lured into traps set by coverage umbrella ● Spotty placement makes his receivers work for it ● Inconsistent poise — breaks pocket prematurely at times ● Doesn’t have body strength to squirm out of tackle attempts ● Below-average ball security, in and out of pocket (25 career fumbles)
Projection
A three-year starter at Illinois, Altmyer was productive in offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr.’s balanced, pro-style scheme. He helped the Illini combine for 19 wins over the past two seasons and finished his Illinois career ranked No. 1 in program history in completion percentage (64.4) and No. 2 in touchdown passes (57). His “clutch” gene showed up frequently, as he led the Illini offense to seven game-winning drives in the final minute or overtime during his career. Though nothing about his physical skill set will wow you, Altmyer makes the most of his talent and competes with the intelligence and mental fortitude required for the next level. His arm strength and accuracy are average, but he knows how to touch up throws and plays with a pre-snap plan to get the ball into the hands of his weapons. Overall, Altmyer is limited in areas but can be a point guard-style passer who distributes the ball quickly and efficiently. He can have a Taylor Heinicke-type NFL career, in the right situation.
